As art jewelry comes into its own in America, galleries are clasping onto the trend and finding success with the art/jewelry mix. Throughout the world, body ornamentation is an ancient and time-honored art form. Yet in the United States, jewelry as art has only recently come into its own. The distinction between mass-produced jewelry and art jewelry is not just in the quantity but the design, said jewelry artist Gretchen Kubacky of Los Angeles. Ive seen some stunningly high-quality designs in a department store that wouldnt be considered fine art, and Ive seen $5,000 diamond earrings that have no design quality to them. Art is in the eye of the beholder.
At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. On closer examination, however, its not youre typical jewelry store, it is a very special place. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler. From the showroom one can peer down a short hall at the end of the store to the large steel door of the vault where the company places its valuable inventory every evening. The vault used to be part of the First National Bank in Adams County, which was the only one that didnt shut down in the crash of 1929.
Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will. The fashion for decorative emblems and badges was taken up with enthusiasm in the courts of Europe during the Renaissance. Both devotional and amorous allusions are common in these decorative devices, which closely echo contemporary jewel work. One of the most charming designs for an emblem shows Cupid rashly pursuing the sweetness of the honeycomb only to be stung by the bees who have made it (Pl. XIII), a poignant allegory of the pleasure and pain of love. The Netherlandish hat badge in Plate IX is an emblem depicting a woman choosing between two suitors surrounded by a motto that can be translated “love is something but money is everything.”

In traditional HR thinking, there are salary budgets and then there are benefits budgets. But in what might be the leading edge of a trend, 17 percent of the companies surveyed recently by Mercer Human Resource Consulting say they are lowering their 2003 salary increases–or are considering doing so–to offset health-care cost increases. Employers are now taking a holistic view of reward programs, says Philadelphia-based Mercer consultant Steven E. Gross. Two years ago, companies operated in silos: they made independent decisions for salaries and benefits, Gross says. But as the economy weakened, profits flattened, and health-care costs made double-digit jumps two years in a row, companies began to rethink that approach. Gross says the trend will grow in the years to come. This year, 17 percent are saying, This is on the table. Three years ago, you would have gotten under 5 percent.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. For what its worth Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.

Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. In phase one of the study, half the participants ate a control diet of 1,200 to 1,500 kcal/day (Group A); the other half ate two meal and two snack replacement products (vitamin- and mineral-fortified shakes, soups, and bars) and a 600 to 900 kcal meal containing 30 to 45 grams of protein (Group B). After 3 months, participants in Group A lost a mean of 1.5% of baseline body weight; they had no changes in their systolic blood pressure, plasma triacylglycerol, or glucose or insulin concentrations. Participants in Group B had a significantly higher weight loss-a mean of 7.8% of body weight. They also had signficantly reduced systolic blood pressure, tricylglycerol, and glucose and insulin concentrations.
Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. Losing a small percentage of body weight can make a big difference in reducing an obese persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Yet maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a problem. A German study published in the August 2000 issue of Obesity Research reports that using one meal and one snack replacement product a day can help those whove lost weight keep it off.

The weight loss market for food and beverages is expected to increase at an annual compounded growth rate of 3.7% for the next four years, reaching $17.5 billion by 2004.

Junk shop chic is the creed, and After Noah the name that husband and wife team Matthew Crawford and Zoe Candlin chose for their shop - they liked its suggestion that they would sell absolutely anything post- diluvian. Upper Street, Islington - the Kings Road of north London - was where they decided to found their business. Success came swiftly, and earlier this year they opened a second shop on the real Kings Road in Chelsea. Down a steep staircase you can find anything from a Twenties coat button to a kitsch decorated rubber washing-up glove as used today. After Noah brings a whole new meaning to eclecticism. But, of course, it would not have been enough simply to house a lot of junk, no matter how desirable. After Noahs popularity is the result of a meeting of two canny business minds, both with strong artistic bents and very different talents. “When we opened After Noah we wanted to combine our talents,” explains Matthew. “We both have a strong idea of our individual styles and managed to merge them well.” Matthews background as a cabinet maker and furniture restorer ensures that whatever comes in for sale can be lovingly restored and beeswaxed back to health. His apprenticeship to his grandfather more than a decade ago means that he now boasts a workshop of 12 years standing, trusted by the likes of English Heritage, Kew Gardens and even one or two embassies. Zoe is an artist and mosaicist with an unerring eye for consumer delights and a nice line in mosaic table-tops, which are now one of the shops most popular lines. The balance of old and new pieces is about 60-40, but youd never know it. A handmade steel bed may resemble the one your granny owned, but its available from the workshop, starting at pounds 595. Conical chocolate cups at about pounds 4 apiece look as if they are the last batch of a Thirties consignment. But dont worry - there will be a huge delivery of more next week. If there is one thing After Noah has achieved it is this balance of old incidentals and the ultra new, such as Tumbler cups -vessels with a rocking bottom -and the vinyl vase - a strip of plastic sleevelets which you fill with water for single stems and attach to your window. A price range stretching from pocket money to Fort Knox ensures that After Noah is relied on heavily by gift hunters: bored with the mass of glossy shops all offering similar goods found in every city centre, they troop in here knowing that they are always likely to find something a little different. The philosophy of After Noah is simple: keep it basic, keep it functional. There is almost a puritanical streak running through the choice of merchandise in the shop, made doubtful only by the chaos: you may bang your knee on a stool and collide with a spray of dried flowers, both at the same moment. After Noah is like an attic. Its your attic, my attic - different contents, but the same mania. So perhaps there is a little bit of all of us that responds to what one of Matthews assistants calls “disorganised comfort”. “People dont live in museums,” pronounces Matthew. “They acquire things over a period of time. Some are good quality, some are not, but overall there is a look, a cohesiveness.” Is it perhaps a look which is simply a home from home, or do they, Jekyll- and-Hyde-style, live in high Napoleonic splendour? “I think the shop is probably nicer to live in,” Matthew confesses with a little laugh. Recently an advertising campaign has raised the profile of After Noah, which has prompted the couple to open a second outlet on the Kings Road in Chelsea - some would say, the Upper Street of the South. CASE DESCRIPTION The primary subject matter of this case concerns the operational philosophy and actions of a small retail jewelry store. Secondary issues examined include the nature of the jewelry and diamond market, selecting an appropriate target market, developing a merchandise mix to satisfy target customers, pricing and promotion strategies for a small retail jeweler, and store location decisions. The case has a difficulty level of four, appropriate for senior level. The case is designed to be taught in one class hour and is expected to require one hour of outside preparation by students. Jack Adams owns and manages an independent jewelry store in Florida. He is facing a number of issues concerning the stores competitive effectiveness in the local jewelry market. The immediate decision is whether he should move from his long-established store location. Although his store is not very up-to-date, it is in a high-traffic location and receives a lot of exposure. He caters to a middle class clientele, but fancies his business as a higher quality, upscale operation. Thus, there are issues of image and positioning in the local jewelry market among competitors. Other questions concern his lack of effective promotion activities and hours and days of operation. All of Jacks decisions relate to the issue of his customer service and marketing orientation. The case also incorporates global dimensions as it describes the nature of the diamond market.

Knife ID There are three main types of kitchen knives: carbon steel, high- carbon stainless-steel and ceramic. High-carbon knives are the softest metal and tend to stay sharper longer. The downside is that they tend to rust and stain. Ceramic knives also stay very sharp, but they can break, so they must be handled with extreme care.

First step after an indirect lending transaction: Get new members attention. In some business sectors, it seems to be an occupational hazard to confuse products with customers, or at least to treat them interchangeably. Consider the example of a sandwich shop employee announcing orders ready for pickup by calling, “OK, whos the ham and Swiss? Whos the Italian sub, no mayo?” The frustrating tendency of these new members to ignore invitations to take full advantage of their membership has resulted in some credit unions getting out of the indirect business altogether or at least shelving marketing efforts that focus on these borrowers. But others continue to experiment in search of effective ways to welcome these new members into the credit union fold.

At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. WebReserv.com, a reservation site for small-
and medium-sized businesses, today announced the addition of booking
capabilities targeted towards RV rental, boat rental and boat charter
companies.
Two sailing vessels participating in the Regatta Del Sol race in the Gulf of Mexico in early May were battered by stormy weather, forcing crews to send mayday distress calls on beacons rented from the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. The BoatU.S. Foundation makes these $900 406 MHz Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) available for $50 a week as a public service. The crews aboard both vessels were successfully located and rescued by Coast Guard helicopters and ships. On May 1 around 9 p.m. the crew of the S/V Luan Two activated their EPIRB after spending two days battling thunderstorms, winds up to 30 mph and 12-foot seas in an increasingly damaged vessel. The sailors were entered in the race from St. Petersburg, FL, to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The high winds had progressively blown out the 36-foot Gulfstar sloops main, jib and storm sails, leaving the vessel under power only. However, the agitated sea state then disabled the engine, leaving it dangerously adrift and facing a possible rollover with no steerage.

Business Editors, High Tech Writers Banks handle millions of transactions a day, diligently checking each one to ensure that it is done accurately and correctly.
The so-called hard money lenders-mortgage lenders who for a price will finance real estate properties that dont meet the specifications of prime lenders have gone mainstream in a way that was virtually unthinkable only a year ago, say executives at Pergolis Swartz Associates. Hard money lenders played a key role last fall when borrowers lost their commitments from Wall Street and needed quick money to rescue their deals. In numerous cases, these hard money lenders stepped into the breach and saved the day. Hard money lenders also have been instrumental in bringing a class of properties to market that prime lenders avoid. Thanks to their financing, millions of square feet of renovated problem properties have been put back into productive use and economic viability. The hard money lenders have become almost institutional at this point, said Jerry Swartz, a principal of Pergolis Swartz Associates. There are so many viable deals our there today that just dont meet the criteria of the prime lenders or the Wall Street conduits, that the hard money lenders have become an extremely important part of the mortgage financing scene.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Its not that niche products dont have a broad appeal, noted Neil Donnenfeld, senior vice president of global sales and marketing for Advanced Vision Research, its just that broad audience is not yet aware of a potential solution. We have a product were marketing right now, SteriLid Eyelid Cleanser, which is a very good example of that, he said. Its the first product on the market to help treat blepharitis, a common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids that impacts upward of 12 million people, as well as for use in both pre- and post-eye surgery. Blepharitis is a lifelong condition, and the only way to keep blepharitis from flaring is to initiate a daily eyelid cleansing routine, according to the National Eye Institute. Its a niche, Donnenfeld said, because a year into its launch SteriLid has generated $1.5 million in sales–small in comparison with other eye care products, but not so small when you consider that those are all incremental dollars. Thats the value of operating as a niche marketer, Donnenfeld said, identifying and developing products for conditions that may not have a satisfactory solution. It doesnt do the retailer any good if we just switch [the consumer] from one product to another, he said. Weve either got to deliver incremental penny profit, or we have to deliver an incremental sale.
Amniotic Membrane (AM) transplantation appears to shorten healing
time and, in some cases, prevents scarring in those afflicted with
certain, potentially blinding, corneal conditions. These are the
results of two studies appearing in Ophthalmology, the clinical
journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Eye M.D.
Association. In another study, from the Cornea Center at the L.V. Prasad Eye
Institute in Hyderbad, India, AM transplantation, along with surgery,
was used to treat seven eyes of four patients for nonhealing shield
ulcers, a serious vision-threatening complication of vernal
keratoconjunctivitis, a severe form of allergic conjunctivitis.
Although nonhealing shield ulcers are a fairly rare condition, they
can be difficult to manage with conventional therapy, such the use of
steroid drops. The results showed the AM transplants promoted rapid
healing time and reduced scarring.According to Stephen Pflugfelder, M.D., Academy spokesperson and
Professor of Ophthalmology at the Baylor College of Medicine, in
Houston, AM transplantation offers a new modality for treating ocular
surface diseases. “In the case of cicatricial entropion repair, its
use speeds healing and may spare patients from the need to obtain
tissue from other parts of their bodies for grafting on to the back
surface of their eyelids,” he said. “Amniotic membrane also appears
to be an excellent material for promoting healing of inflamed or
damaged corneal tissue resulting from conditions such as non-healing
shield ulcers.”
Facial nerve palsy results in both loss of function and an altered appearance of the eye. There are a number of procedures used to restore the function of the upper eyelid but the lower eyelid is often ignored. The problems of medial and lateral canthal ligament laxity lead to abnormalities of lacrimal function in addition to inadequate eyelid closure. This series reports the results of lower eyelid surgery in addition to the previously described techniques of upper eyelid reanimation. Lateral ligament tightening and medial canthoplasty in combination with gold weight implantation has been highly successful in managing difficult cases of corneal exposure. The most serious early immediate complication of facial paralysis is due to corneal exposure. The surgical management of the eye is often directed towards the upper lid but the lower lid contributes significantly to the problem of exposure keratitis and corneal ulceration. The contour and position of the lower eyelid influence normal lacrimation.

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.

The Seventh Annual I Have A Dream National Youth Assembly recently attracted 1,400 youth from across the country to study the teachings of civil rights martyr Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Motivational speakers, community leaders and celebrities challenged the youthful participants to become drum majors for peace and justice. Actor Charles Dutton, in a special address, encouraged participants to set high standards and charged them not to let their past dictate their future.
Volunteer Mentors Empower The Youth Activities Task Force consists of government employees and other interested adults who serve as mentor-counselors to young people aged 14 to 21. Since it was organized in 1982 as an ad-hoc community group concerned about meeting the needs of young people in Southwest Washington, the Task Force has placed as estimated 450 to 500 teens in summer positions. In a 10-week orientation/training period designed to nurture in the teens a sense of achievement and self-esteem, mentors help the youth-who are primarily from disadvantaged, single-parent or low-income families-prepare resumes, master the job interview process, and develop marketable skills. Barbara Hurlbutt, who has participated in the program since it was launched, notes that the Task Force gives the teen interns an entree into the employment world and a “leg up” into permanent white collar or skilled jobs. She notes: “One of the primary advantages of our program is that it teaches youths what is expected of them in the job world so they wont experience culture shock. They learn that there are consequences to their behavior and actions, and they come to see the link between the Task Force experience and their paychecks. They learn how to seize initiative, budget money and be responsible. The Task Force offers guidance and information to help the kids develop good work habits and discipline, and it regularly monitors their employment progress.”
Global strategy for youth endorsed at conclusion of World Conference on International Youth Year (1985) A global strategy addressing the problems of the worlds young people was approved by the General Assembly at the conclusion of a series of special plenary meetings (13-18 November) designated as the World Conference on the International Youth Year (1985). The Conference also approved three other resolutions: on promotion of human rights of youth, including the right to education and work; expansion of channels of communication between the United Nations and Youth organizations; and opportunities for youth in higher education or vocational training. All were approved without a vote.

GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.

WE had intended to go into Greenwich and take part in some of the street parties running with the nearby Dome celebrations but without a ticket this was to prove fruitless. A group of us headed west from our friends house towards the bridges over the Thames where we could see the fireworks display. The internet websites had listed a string of events we wanted to get to. We headed for the embankment at around 6pm and found a restaurant for an early dinner and people were already gathering for prime position to see the fireworks. There were so many people about and lots of children in pushcairs.

Emanuele Pirro paused, took a deep breath, then leaned forward in his chair, elbows on the table, and said, in a very defining tone, “And now I would like to talk about the car . . . . Its diesel- powered.” That said, he waited for a response. Diesel engines, among most Americans, are not associated seriously with high-speed auto racing. For more than 30 minutes, Pirro, fresh off a flight from Italy, had talked about the upcoming Le Mans Series race coming to Miller Motorsports Park this week, about high speeds and hard braking and maximum performance.
H2Diesel Holdings Inc. has entered into a Test Burn Agreement with Mirant Energy Trading LLC, a subsidiary of Mirant Corp., to demonstrate its proprietary biofuel technology in utility scale power generation applications. The test program will include the evaluation of both technical and environmental performance characteristics of H2Diesels biofuel. Kipors KDE5000TA portable diesel generator boasts a maximum output of 5 kVA but is quiet due to the low-noise design of its enclosure and the addition of an intake silencer and resonator. A digital control panel displays critical operating information such as load characteristics, voltage, power (kVA), frequency, total run time and battery charge voltage. If an unexpected shutdown occurs, the front panel displays a code that reveals the nature of the fault. A convenient electric starter gets the generator up and running quickly. Despite its high output, the KDE5000TA runs for 8.5 hours on a single tank of fuel. Fill in 202 on reader service form or visit http://OneRs.hotims.com/13966-202 [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

In China, Allgon foresees mobile market growth continuing at a significant pace, with wireless investment following suit. The company recently decided to move ahead with plans to start up base station antenna production at a facility near Shanghai later this year. In North America, Allgon said it anticipates ongoing strong antenna sales. The company based its optimism on several factors attracting new users to wireless — an assumption that the FCC will adopt calling party pays in the U.S. market, greater popularity of prepaid services, and the trend toward simplified rate plans.
Demand for the six-year instruments, which were denominated in pesos, doubled the offering. The Mexican government sold $1 billion in 10-year bonds in international markets. Even the corporate sector is in on the trend. Telefonos de Mexico, a Mexican telecommunications company, sold $1.30 billion in debt on Wall Street. Grupo Posadas, a Mexican hotel chain, offered in the United States $75 million in bonds due in 2011. That sale came only three months after a $125 million issue in October 2004.

The past few columns have been filled before getting the Green Eagle Certificates and new American Portfolio enrollments listed. Now is a good time to catch up. Did you know you do not have to be a darkroom printer to join the American Portfolios activities? There is a place for you if you are into computer printing. You may also have your negatives or slides commercially printed. This is such an excellent learning opportunity; anyone actually making pictures should participate. Picture of the Month Contest was fortunate to have James T. Duncan as judge in a recent competition. We like to give a brief statement from the POM judges as to their opinions and/or advice on contest photography. James feels the photographer should look for and produce prints that please themselves and not try for the print that will appeal to the judges. If you like the photo yourself, you may consider it good. POM is still asking potential judges of their monthly contests to step forward and volunteer to serve for one month. Also, if you know someone who would and could, please send his/her name and address to the POM directors, Anthony, APSA, and Lois Winston, 344 Jackson Ave., Morgantown, WV 26501-6614.
PRINT THE LEGEND Photography and the American West Martha A. Sandweiss Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, 2002. Illustrations, notes, index, xiii + 402 pp. $39.95.In the first three chapters of her book, Sandweiss focuses on early daguerreotypes taken by photographers during the Mexican-American War and by photographers employed to document early government expeditions to the West. She explains why the “static literalism” of these early daguerrean photographic images limited their acceptance by a public used to seeing more dramatic visual stories of the western frontier in drawings, panoramic paintings, lithographs, and engravings. In the second part of her book, Sandweiss examines how the replacement of daguerreotype with wet-plate photography affected the publics acceptance of photography. By selling multiple prints arid connecting images with words, photographers communicated more appealing visual narratives about the West and gained public acceptance of their work. Consequently, photography helped shape popular opinion about the region and was, in return, changed by the experience.Sandweisss enlightening and thought-provoking book is a case study in the use of photographs as historical evidence. The authors effort to demonstrate the importance of visual literacy and the value of visual documents, especially in historical research on the West, is certainly a goal that photograph curators and archivists will recognize and appreciate. Sandweisss work underscores the difficulties and challenges of using these complex records, but she also make a convincing argument that the result is well worth the effort.

Never before in the history of American business has a global corporation been destroyed by acts directly related to document retention and destruction In early December 2001, Enron Corp., a large Houstonbased energy company, filed for bankruptcy, one of the largest such actions in U.S. business history. In the weeks that followed, a series of allegations of financial mismanagement and possible violations of law - began to surface. The affair soon began to spill over to Arthur Andersen, Enrons outside auditing and accounting firm. Among the allegations were charges that officials of Andersens Houston office, who were responsible for managing Enrons audits, had illegally destroyed paper and electronic documents related to their representation of Enron.
With identity theft on the rise, two entrepreneurs found a new business opportunity that they say helps alleviate a business owners risk. In April, Matthew Skidell and Phil Barres launched Farmingdale- based Document Destruction Inc., or DDI, a company that can shred 4,000 pounds of paperwork per hour. Skidell came up with the idea of the company while running Pacific Link, a nursing home supply company he founded 10 years ago. He runs both firms from the same location but doesnt share employees, he said. Skidell persuaded Barres, a close friend, to leave his position as a securities trader, and the two opened the firm together.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that in 2003 more than ten million people were victims of identity theft. On average each identity theft victim spends $ 1,400 and takes up to six months to clear their names and correct credit histories. Some experts believe that as much as 70% of the exposure to identity theft comes from the workplace. As a result, federal and state lawmakers have enacted widespread legislation to deal with consumer identity theft, corporate espionage and sabotage in the workplace. Some of these laws include:Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999; Economie Espionage Act; Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003; Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); and Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

The double-reinforced abrasive blade is made of premium-grade zirconium grain and it performs equally effectively with fixtured gas or hydraulic-powered cutting machines. Designed to cut straight with minimum deviation, the longlife blade can be used to cut all types of rail, ranging from that used on main lines and in freight terminals to metros and light rail lines. Reinforcing metal behind the face edge of the teeth of StructurALL bimetal band saw blades adds rigidity and strength to each tooth when sawing structurals and tubing. This permits heavier feed forces for higher cutting rates. Precision ground blades result in smooth chip flow and increased fatigue life. M 42 Cobalt cutting edge improves wear resistance. Positive rake allows aggressive cutting. Tests show these blades outperform other blades by 30 percent when cutting tubing, pipe, structurals, and bundled materials. Come in four widths from 1 to 2 in. and both 3-4 and 4-6 multi-pitch tooth configurations. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
An advanced tooth profile on the new Sandvik 3854 PH bimetal bandsaw blade reportedly enables it to cut difficult alloys smoothly. Called the Sandflex King Cobra, the blade is intended for cutting applications that tax the capabilities of bimetal blades but cant justify the costs associated with carbide blades. The new blade is claimed to improve the accuracy and output of less-rigid bandsaws, or those cutting difficult materials near their workpiece capacities. Patented by Sandvik, the blade employs a tooth design that allows some teeth to cut a thicker chip than others. This design produces lower cutting forces than those typical of other blades, and improves penetration in workhardened materials, according to the manufacturer. Available in sizes from 1-2″ ( 32-51 mm), the new blade reportedly produces smooth cuts in tool steels, precipitation-hardening stainless, and beryllium copper. In most cases, it uses the same cutting data as other bimetal blades. For more information, Circle 203.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Reservoir Control staff with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, are working 24 hours a day to monitor the 25 lakes in Texas that the District operates. All Corps lakes are operating as designed and all dams are structurally sound. A minimal amount of flood water is going over the spillway at Lewisville Lake but no flooding is expected as a result. As the main stem of the Trinity River at Dallas and below recedes into its banks, releases from Lewisville Lake will be initiated. Grapevine Lake, the smallest of the three lakes, is 57 percent into the flood pool. All these lakes will probably have some flood water the entire month of July. In the Brazos River Basin, all nine Corps lakes are in the flood pool. These lakes include Whitney, Waco, Aquilla, Proctor, Belton, Stillhouse Hollow, Georgetown, Granger, and Somerville. Proctor, Belton and Stillhouse are filled to at least 65 percent of their flood pools. Flood releases were initiated on Saturday, June 30, from both Belton and Stillhouse. Releases from Proctor Dam were started June 29 at the rate of 3,000 cfs. The high flows from Possum Kingdom Lake have raised Whitney Lake to elevation 554.5 feet. It is forecasted to rise to elevation 560 feet (27 feet above normal) by this weekend. The high lake level may force the closing of several bridges at the upper end of the lake. Currently, there is approximately 30,000 cfs flowing through the city of Waco due to discharges from Whitney, Waco and Aquilla Lakes. This high flow may continue for several weeks in order to lower these lakes.
Having cleaned up on the bass fishing tour in two of the five events of the inaugural season of the pro-am Mercury Marine Womens Bassmaster Tour, Diana Clark of Bumpus Mills, TN, won the most points overall to be named female Angler of the Year. Clark, 42, rocketed from 32nd place in the first event on Neely Henry Lake in Alabama to win the next tournament on Lewisville Lake in Texas. She took another first place on Lake Norman, NC, and placed in the top 10 at two others, which gave her the top points overall. A close second was Tammy Richardson of Amity, AR, who won the first and last tournaments and missed being Angler of the Year by three points. BASS expanded its pro-am tour schedule this year to include a womens-only event with $600,000 in prize money. Judging from the hundreds of women who traveled from all comers of the U.S. and several foreign countries to compete, it was a keeper (See BoatU.S. Magazine, July 2006, pg 34). Hitting a home run, kicking a field goal or scoring a basket is all-important in the sports world, but the only game in town to retailers and manufacturers licensing sports apparel is finding the hot trends and cashing in on a growing business. Much of the popularity of sports licenses can be attributed to the high enjoyment value and low monetary expenditure of the purchase. “At a time when the economy is down, people still want to have some kind of fun, they want a low-ticket item instead of a high-ticket item,” said Ira Silverman, president of Silverman, Warren-Kremer Inc., a public relations firm representing NFL Properties and other apparel licenses. “Its a value purchase. ” Appealing to consumers, especially men, drives sales. “Men are into wearing apparel from a team they like. Their purchasing is more team specific, as opposed to women who tend to wear more generic sweatshirts or T-shirts with a fashion-forward design,” said John Devorkin, dmm of mens wear at Braintree, Mass.-based Bradlees.

SEATTLE — Dr. Rhys Spoor, DDS, FAGD, an international expert in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, has been selected by his peers as one of the Top 10 Dentists for Cosmetic Dentistry in the Puget Sound region, as published in the January 2006 edition of Seattle magazine. The rankings are based on dentists who received the most votes. In addition, all dentists were verified as being in good standing with the Washington State Department of Health.
A few years ago, Dr. Bernie Villadiego saw 15 to 20 patients a day, made treatment decisions based on what insurance companies would reimburse, and, ultimately, grew cranky and bored. Today Villadiego, a Chatsworth dentist, averages between six and eight patients a day, performs any number of state-of-the-art procedures and bills for what the treatments are worth.

Women who are not proficient in English can now receive translation services for some legal procedures that protect against domestic violence, thanks to funds from the STOP Violence Against Women Grant Program. The translation services will aid in the completion of petitions for orders of protection and provide translation services during the resulting hearings. Interpreting will be done by telephone for the filings; an interpreter will offer on- site services during subsequent proceedings whenever possible and will interpret by phone if prevented from attending court. The translating services bring Missouris state courts into compliance with Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prevents discrimination on the basis of national origin. The Office of the State Courts Administrator aims for its brochures — printed in Bosnian, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese — that announce the new services to be displayed in venues where victims of domestic violence seek aid, including courts, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and shelters. The documents detail the signs of abuse, give instructions for receiving help and remind that eligibility for protection does not require citizenship or legal permanent residency.

Los Angeles-based Innovative Card Technologies Inc. last week announced a venture with VeriSign Inc. intended to combat online fraud. Called the DisplayCard, the product generates passwords that can be used to validate online logins or transactions offering an additional layer of security to complement the traditional login name and password authentication. The DisplayCard product comes as financial services groups find themselves pressed by regulators and trade groups such as the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council to beef up security for cyberspace transactions and electronic access to financial data. The council had suggested to banks and other finance companies in 2005 that that they implement what the council called multiple-factor authentication by the end of 2006. That hasnt happened yet. but the card is one step in that direction.

Among the presents were gift cards for her colleagues at work. “This is my second time coming back to buy them for work. I was thinking about buying them for friends and people I havent talked to for a while,” she said. “I dont usually get them for my family, because I usually buy presents for them, but usually for friends or people I dont see a lot, Ill usually send them a card.”

$41 Million in Billing in Question In 1998, Robert Smith, the owner of Accident Injury Pain Center, Inc. (A I) in Dallas, Texas, appointed Dr. Rhudy as chief of staff and “compliance officer” of A I. Accident and Injury is a chain of health care facilities specializing in personal injury with 16 offices in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston, all overseen by Rhudy and another doctor. Robert Smith also appointed Dr. Rhudy as compliance officer for North Texas MRI, White Rock MRI, and Rehab 2112. Late in 2001, Allstate Insurance Company and its related companies filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court, claiming that A I (and its related companies) illegally billed Allstate for various patient services. Allstate amended the complaint on Jan. 14, 2003, charging AI, its related entities and various chiropractors, osteopaths and medical doctors with violations of “numerous provisions of the Texas Occupations Code,” common-law fraud, common-law conspiracy and unjust enrichment.7 Named in the lawsuit were A I, Robert Smith, Thomas Rhudy, DC; nine associated companies; three medical doctors; 13 chiropractors; two osteopaths; and a pharmacy.

Fortunately, those who dare to bare are now very welcome to do so and, with our current partiality to an all-over tan, the classic string bikini has become a firm favourite. Tiny triangular cups and string ties are great for avoiding tan lines and ensuring maximum exposure to the sun. Missoni (tel: 0870 837 7377) and Pistol Panties (tel: 020 7229 5286) both stock several teeny-weeny designs, while Aussie label Billabong (tel: 02392 465 577) has great sporty versions. For more modest bikinis, mail-order firms Toast (tel: 0870 240 5200) and Boden (tel: 0845 677 5000) both offer 1950s-influenced bikinis with shorts-style bottoms. There are also plenty of good budget ones out there. Topshop (tel: 0845 121 4519), HM (tel: 0207 323 2211) and even Primark (tel: 0118 9606 300) have great ranges. They may only last a few years, but they are a real high-fashion bargain.
Death jolted a tranquil Thai island last week when Katherine Horton, a British holidaymaker, was beaten, probably raped, then left to die on Lamai beach, Koh Samui. Her father, Ian, said it all: Katherine came to Thailand to dance on a beach, to ride an elephant, to have a vacation before her finals at university. Tragically her faith in her fellow man let her down and she has been taken from us for ever. Thai police are questioning four Thai men seen on motorbikes at the time. Katherines companion, Ruth Adams, has gone home. But life on the beach goes on, and so does the party, for this is not the survival challenge portrayed in the book and film The Beach, based on an island off the Thai coast.
The book is reviewed in this issue, and will be of particular use to tutors for professional development plans. Bandolier will try to use some of these ideas in future.
